I am a professional freelance illustrator specializing in children's literature
including picture books, middle grade novels and educational books.
Picture books commonly have 32 interior pages plus 2 covers.
The pages are broken down as follows...
4 pages = title page, publisher's info page, dedication page, The End page
28 pages = 14 pages of text and 14 pages of art (28)
OR
14 two page spreads with a combo of text and art (28)
OR
a combination of both single pages and spreads (28)
2 pages = front cover, back cover
PRICE PER PAGE
Price per page is determined by style and layout...
STYLE - When quoting you a price per page, I will ask what style you are
looking for. Simpler styles take less final art time so they cost less.
More detailed and realistic styles take more final art time and cost more. I also
consider if the art will be on a white background or if it will be full bleeds -
which is when the background covers all of the page.
LAYOUT - When quoting you a price per page, I will ask you about layout. For
instance, you can have single pages accompany each page of text or you can have
two page spreads with the text mixed in - or perhaps a combo of both throughout
the book.
Once we decide together what style the illustrations will be and the basic layout,
I will create the main characters for the book. I will send you images to review
and approve via email.
I will then take your manuscript and break it down into the book pages.
A rough sketch will be made for each page. I will provide you with a book
dummy which consists of these sketches. The dummy places the art and the text
together in a simple mock up so you can better envision what your finished book will look like. The dummy will be mailed to you for approval.
Changes can easily be made at this point and I welcome your input.
Once all sketch approvals are in, I will begin the final art!
You will receive the final art as high res files on a flash drive via regular mail in
both .jpg and .tif file format.
These art files are now ready for your publisher/printer.
They will design your book, including adding the text, using their book design
software which gets everything ready for print.
I do not set the text.
Book illustration usually takes from 3 - 6 months from start to finish.
Payments are broken into thirds.
1/3 before we begin
1/3 before final art begins (after you approve the book dummy)
1/3 after final art is complete and you receive your files
A simple contract is signed by both of us before I begin. This protects both of us
and ensures that we are on the same page before the work begins.
Please know that I am with you every step of the way to ensure that your book
represents what you envisioned when you wrote the story!
